What happened?

On Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at 8:38 a.m., a 3.2 magnitude earthquake struck near Elgin, South Carolina. The quake was centered about 11 miles (18 kilometers) northwest of Columbia, the state capital. It was felt across the Midlands region, including in Columbia, Lexington, and Irmo.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The quake was the strongest to hit South Carolina since a 3.3 magnitude quake in 2014.
